In just over 20 weeks§ time, a Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization will take place in Qatar. At that meeting, ministers, representing their national governments, aim to agree upon an agenda and timetable to launch the next round of multilateral trade negotiations. Will we have a repeat of Seattle - or a new beginning?
Launching a new trade round, with an achievable agenda and timetable, is important - No, I would say crucial! It matters to companies such as Unilever which have a clear interest in a dynamic and rules-based global system for trade and investment. It matters to governments all around the world looking to improve their national prosperity, but most of all, it matters to billions of ordinary people struggling to improve their lives and to create better futures for their children.
