'국제시장'의 통역사

영화 국제시장에는 우리 학교 31기 졸업생 전희경이 주인공의 영상 통역사로 나오는 덕분에 그 동기 몇 명과 같이 영화를 보러갔습니다. 평소 TV나 영화를 보다가 잘 우는 약점(?)을 가진 나는 "많이 울테니 내버려두라"는 경고를 내리고 손수건을 꺼내들고 영화를 보기 시작했지요. 주인공이 가수 남진과 동갑이라면 1946년 생, 나보다 7살 많은 내 친형님과 같은 또래입니다. 

1965년 10월 16일 '맹호부대'의 본대가 부산항에서 출국하기 전 군용열차가 내 고향인 대구역을 지날 때 12살의 어린이였던 나는 학교에서 차출되어 같이 연습한 군가를 태극기를 흔들며 불렀던 기억이 납니다.

어린 나이지만 월남전 참전의 그 분위기를 이렇게 체험했고 그 전부터 아버님 세대가 불렀던

'굳세어라 금순아'도 영화의 초반에 나오는 흥남부두의 분위기와 온전히 싱크되는 걸 느꼈습니다. 

흥남 철수가 1950년 12월이었으나 이 노래가 나온 것은 내가 태어난 1953년이었음에도 불구하고... 

2005년 쯤 교수들과 노래방에서 내가 이 노래를 불렀을 때 10살 연하의 한 남자 교수는 

"소름이 끼친다"고 했습니다.

금순아 어디를 가서 길을 잃고 헤매였더냐 피눈물을 흘리면서 일사이후 나홀로 왔다

금순아 보고 싶구나 고향꿈도 그리워진다 영도 다리 난간 위에 초생달만 외로이 떴다 


3. 철의 장막 모진 설움 받고서 살아를 간들 천지간에 너와 난데 변함 있으랴 

금순아 굳세어다오 남북통일 그날이 오면 손을 잡고 울어보자 얼싸안고 춤도 추어보자 


영화를 보는 도중 나를 처음 울린 것은 김윤진이었고, 그녀의 가녀린 몸매는 보호본능을 자극하면서 

내 눈에 최루탄 역할을 했습니다. 내가 살았던 프랑스의 옆나라 독일의 분위기도 충분히 상상이 되어 

더 눈물이 났습니다. 드디어 통역사가 나오는 장면, 흥남부두에서 헤어졌던 여동생은 미국으로 입양되어 

우리말을 잊었기에 통역이 필요했지만 한 가지 우리말은 잊지 않고 있다가 우리말로 해 통역도 필요 없이 

그가 주인공이 찾던 사람임을 웅변했습니다. 

"막순아. 우리가 운동회 가는 것 앙이다. 정신 똑바로 차리고 오빠를 따라오라. 장난 치는 게 아니다!!" 

이 말에 이어 그녀가 꺼내 든  찢긴 저고리 소매는 내 눈을 온통 눈물로 가득 채웠습니다. 

아, 그 시절 그 격동기의 아픔이여....

영화 ‘국제시장’에 대한 때아닌 이념 논쟁은 한국 사회의 천박성을 드러낸다. 영화에 대한 평점을 보면 네이버 이용자는 10점 만점에 9점, 다음 이용자는 6.9점으로 뚜렷이 나뉜다. 파독 광부, 베트남 전, 이산가족 찾기 등 배경이 된 시대를 놓고 유신 독재를 미화한다고 주장하는 진보나, 박정희 시대에 대한 향수를 느끼게 해준다는 보수나 둘 다 납득이 가지 않는다. 영화 메시지는 험난한 시절을 견뎌온 아버지에 대한 헌사 그 이상도, 이하도 아닌데 메시지는 실종되고 영화의 시대적 배경을 두고 정치적 해석만 난무한다. 영화에 대한 평가도 갈라지게 하는 우리 사회 이념 과잉은 불치병 수준인 듯하다. 

2012년 영화 ‘광해, 왕이 된 남자’ 개봉 당시 광해군이 고 노무현 대통령을 연상시킨다며 보수 세력들은 영화 제작사인 CJ E&M을 두고 좌파권력과 손잡은 재벌이라고 매도하더니 이번엔 진보 진영에서 CJ가 이재현 회장의 사면을 노리고 박정희 시대를 미화하는 영화를 만들었다고 공격하고 있다. 

영화 한 편이 흥행할 때마다 제작사가 좌파로 몰리기도 하고 우파로 몰리기도 한다. ‘동물농장’의 작가 조지 오웰은 “예술은 정치와 무관해야 한다는 의견 자체가 정치적 태도”라고 주장했지만 그것은 작가로서의 변이었다. 우리의 경우 윤제균 감독이 “내 영화를 정치적으로 해석하지 말아 달라”고 호소할 정도니 상황이 많이 다르다. 새해 벽두 한반도와 일본에서 세 편의 영화가 그 나라의 수준과 국민의 톨레랑스를 시험하고 있다. 정성희 논설위원 shchung@donga.com
