대통령 통역은 왜 ‘독이 든 성배’인가

대통령 통역은 흔히 ‘독이 든 성배’라 불린다. 성공해도 공은 대통령에게 돌아가고, 작은 실수라도 생기면 곧장 통역사에게 비난이 집중된다. 지난 8월 25일 한·미 정상회담 직후 대통령 통역을 맡은 조영민 행정관을 둘러싸고 논란이 이어지는 것도 같은 맥락이다. 일부는 그를 백악관의 이연향 통역국장과 단순 비교하며 교체론까지 제기한다. 그러나 이는 공정하지 않다.

 

우선 경력의 격차가 크다. 이연향 국장은 20년 이상 백악관에서 활약하며 트럼프 대통령과 김정은 위원장 간의 극적인 회담을 세 차례이상 통역한 노련한 인재다. 반면 조 행정관은 39세의 젊은 나이에 첫 대통령 회담이라는 무대에 올랐다. 언어 환경 역시 다르다. 이 국장은 오랜 미국 생활로 영어를 사실상 모국어처럼 구사하는 이중언어 화자다. 조 행정관은 서울에서 근무하며 필요할 때 영어를 사용하는 수준이다. 원어민식 발음이 아니라는 이유로 흠잡는 것은 본질을 놓친 평가다.

 

청중의 차이도 무겁다. 백악관 회담에서 이연향 국장이 한국어로 통역할 때 이를 검증할 수 있는 이는 한국 측 소수뿐이다. 그러나 조 행정관의 영어 통역은 수십 명의 미국 기자와 관계자 앞에 그대로 드러난다. 부담의 무게가 다르다.

 

여기에 트럼프라는 특수 변수가 있다. 그는 언어와 표현에 유난히 민감해 길고 느린 통역을 싫어하며, 때로는 상대국 통역을 직접 끊기도 한다. 지난 4월 미·이탈리아 정상회담에서는 이탈리아 측 통역사가 압박감에 눌려 멈추자 멜로니 총리가 직접 영어로 통역하는 장면까지 있었다. 이연향 국장은 트럼프와 몇 차례 호흡을 맞추며 상당한 편안함을 느낄 수 있었지만, 조 행정관은 첫 회담에서 대통령의 발언을 낯선 리듬 속에서 옮겨야 했다.

 

이런 조건을 무시한 채 ‘더 나이 많은 통역사, 더 원어민 같은 영어’를 요구하는 것은 현실을 모르는 주장이다. 대통령 통역은 단순한 언어 능력 이상의 과제를 안고 있다. 정치적 맥락, 정상 간의 긴장, 회담장의 압박을 동시에 소화해야 한다. 이런 무대에서 첫 시도부터 완벽을 기대하는 것은 무리다.

 

따라서 중요한 것은 기다림이다. 대통령과 통역사 사이의 호흡은 시간이 쌓여야 자연스러워진다. 조 행정관 역시 경험을 축적하며 점차 안정감을 얻을 것이다. 2차, 3차 정상회담에서는 더 여유 있고 부드러운 통역을 보여줄 수 있을 것이다.

 

나아가 대통령 통역을 특정 개인의 능력에만 맡길 것이 아니라, 장기적으로 체계적인 인재 육성과 보호 장치가 필요하다. 대통령 통역이 언제까지나 ‘독이 든 성배’로 남지 않으려면, 통역사를 희생양이 아닌 국가 외교의 동반자로 존중하는 문화가 자리 잡아야 한다.

때론 시냇물처럼 때론 벼랑끝 폭포수처럼 말소리에 힘을 주고 힘을 빼면서 뜻을 전한다.
오랜전 사극에서 조선 숙종 임금이 역관을 모아놓고 “이번 청나라 사신과의 담판에서 정승판서가 담판에 서툴면 역관이 국익을 위해서 사견을 말해도 책망하지 않겠다”. 그때나 지금이나 통역과 삶의 본질은 변하지 않는다.
통역이라는 <그릇>에 철학과 신념, 숨기거나 포장하지 않고 자기만의 이야기를 담는다. 통역과 삶이 곧 글이 된다. 얼마나 근사한가!
