[순차통역]이란 무엇인가

이재명 대통령은 지난 24일 오후 3시(현지 시각) 뉴욕의 유엔본부에서 ‘AI와 국제평화·안보’를 주제로 안전보장이사회 공개 토의를 주재하기에 앞서 국내외 언론을 상대로 짧은 성명(statement)을 발표했다. 그런데 한국 측 관계자가 이 성명을 영어로 전달하려는 도중에 대통령이 회의장 안으로 들어가 버림으로써 이 관계자만 혼자 남아 성명의 영역본을 읽는 어색한 상황이 연출됐다고 한다.

 

주유엔 한국 대표부는 이날 오전 9시반쯤 유엔 출입 외신 기자들에게 이 대통령이 안보리 토의를 주재하기 10분 전 언론 대기 구역에서 성명을 낸다고 통보했단다. 안보리 회의 때는 각국의 관계자가 회의 전후에 회의장 바로 앞에 있는 언론 구역에서 준비한 성명을 읽고 기자들과 문답을 하는 경우가 종종 있기 때문에 각국 대표부는 기자들에게 그 일정을 사전에 공지한다.

 

한국대표부는 이날 공지에서 “이 대통령은 순차 통역(Consecutive interpreting)과 함께 성명을 발표할 예정”이라고 했단다. ‘순차 통역’은 화자(speaker)가 몇 문장 또는 한 문단 정도를 말하고 멈추면 통역사가 이를 통역하는 과정이 순차적으로 이어지는 방식이다.

 

[순차통역]은 1970년 대 말 처음 한국어로 번역된 용어다. 당시 한국외대에서 동양 최초의 통역대학원 개원을 준비하면서 대학과 문교부 관계자들이 미국과 유럽의 유수한 통번역 전문 학교로 출장 가 “통역이란 무엇인가”에 관련된 정보 및 지식을 얻어왔다. 출장 후 관계자들이 처음으로 번역해낸 표현이 동시(simultaneous) 통역과 순차 통역이었다. 동시 통역은 통역사가 부스 안에서 이어폰과 마이크를 이용해 실시간으로 통역하는 방식이다. 실제 외대의 대학원은 설립당시 [동시통역대학원]”으로 불리다가 1980년 말 [통역대학원]으로 명칭을 변경했다

 

그로부터 45년동안 두 통역방식은 통역 전문가들 사이에서만 통용이 되었고, 일반인들은 “동시통역”을 “능숙한 즉석통역” 정도로 치부해 왔는데 이번 뉴욕 안보리 행사 보도로 정립이 된 것이다. 이번 해프닝을 계기로 정확한 통역 관련 용어가 널리 사용되기를 바란다. 또 한가지, 통역사들이 수첩에 적는 내용은 속기(stenography)가 아니라 노트하기(note-taking) 라고 한다는 것도...  (끝)
