[일사일언] 우리말로 숫자 읽기

초등학교 4학년인 지인이가 수학 숙제를 풀면서 낑낑대고 있었다. 지인이는 자기 머리 탓을 하면서 급기야 울먹이기 직전에야 도움을 청했다. 딸애가 풀던 수학문제는 7자리 수 이상의 큰 수를 우리말로 읽어내는 것이었다.

예컨대 200,600,000을 우리말로 읽으면? 자릿수를 ‘따져보지 않고’ 이 숫자를 즉각적으로 우리말로 말할 수 있는 사람이 몇이나 될까. 한참을 고민하다 문제들을 모두 고쳤다. 즉 원래의 문제를 2,0060,0000으로 고치고, 우리말의 만, 억, 조, 경이 네 자리로 끊어 읽는 단위임을 알려주었다. 그랬더니 지인이는 따져보지 않고도 숫자를 보자마자 즉각적으로 ‘이억, 육십만’으로 읽어냈다. 자기의 둔한 머리 탓을 하며 쩔쩔매던 지인이가 신이 나서 문제를 풀어나갔다.

 현재 우리는 숫자를 세 자리마다 콤마를 찍어 읽도록 되어 있다. 이 방식은 서양말로 숫자를 읽는 방식이다. 즉 6,000은 식스 사우전드이고, 2,000,000은 투 밀리언이다. 그러나 우리말의 만, 억, 조, 경은 네 자리로 끊어 읽어야 한다. 즉 2,0000,0000은 이억, 6,0000은 육만이다. 세 자리 콤마의 숫자 기술 방식은 우리말과 전혀 맞지 않는다. 그 결과는 수많은 평범한 사람들을 수학에 둔감한 바보로 만들어 버린다.


누구를 위해 세 자리마다 콤마로 구분하는 방식을 사용하고 있는지 모르겠다.
