경북중고 53회 동기생 곽중철 씀

 

오늘 밤 튀니지와의 친선 축구 경기가 막 시작되는 순간 가족이 “이럴 수가 있나, 허준영 씨가 돌아가셨대”라고 전해줬을 때 내 귀를 의심했다. 어릴 때 유도를 연마해 나보다 훨씬 건강하고 복스런 얼굴과 탄탄한 몸매를 자랑하던 그가 죽다니? 축구도 보는 둥 마는 둥 오늘 밤은 쉽게 잠들지 못할 것 같아 기억나는 대로 그의 이야기를 써보려 한다. 기억력에 한계가 있어 빠진 얘기나 틀린 얘기를 친구들이 귀띔해 주면 완본을 만들어 그의 영전에 바치려 한다.

내가 성인이 되어 그를 다시 만난 것은 1980년대 초 프랑스의 수도 파리에서였다. 1981년인가 파리의 일산 격인 라데팡스La Defense라는 신도시에서 우리 두 부부는 이웃으로 1년 넘게 살았다. 갓 태어난 그의 장녀 서윤을 무척이나 귀여워했었다. 그는 통역사인 나와 마찬가지로 3개국어(한/영/불) 구사자로 언변이 좋아 친구들을 조용히 웃기곤 했다.  

파리 시내 남쪽의 14구에는 해양생물학을 전공하던 동기생 최승민 네 부부가 살고 있어 우리는 상호 가구방문을 하며 시간 가는 줄을 몰랐다. 1980년 14회 외무고시에 합격해 해외연수를 나온 허상 네가 장학생인 우리보다는 형편이 좀 나았겠다. 그러다가 허상 네는 남불의 아비뇽으로 실습을 나갔고 승민 네는 역시 남불의 해양도시 니스로 갔기에 우리는 또 상호 방문하며 향수를 달랬다.

다른 친구들처럼 나도 그의 개명인 허준영보다 허상이라는 이름에 익숙하다. 준영이라는 이름은 그의 텁텁한 이미지와 어울리지 않게 너무 말쑥하기 때문이다. 그도 이름 얘기를 하면서 “친구들이 외자 이름을 놀려대었기에 시험 답안지 이름 난에 ‘허상 용띠’라고 네 글자를 쓰곤 했다고 회상했다. 그로부터 한참 뒤, 파리 유학시절 그는 우리에게 자신은 영화 벤 허의 주인공 쥬다 벤 허와 같은 허 씨 집안이라고 허풍을 떨기도 했다.

우리보다 먼저 귀국한 그는 미국 FBI에 연수 후 1989년에는 주 홍콩 총영사관 총영사로 부임했는데 나는 홍콩 출장을 나간 김에 집값이 비싼 홍콩의 대궐 같은 총영사 숙소에서 시간을 보내기도 했다. 1993년 총경으로 경북 영양 경찰서장으로 나갔을 때는 대구에서 차를 몰고 영양 골짜기로 갔는데 “영양에서는 전근 발령이 나면 무조건 영전”이라고 하면서 서장 관사에 있는 작은 잡종견을 가리키며 “저래 봬도 경찰견”이라고 우리를 웃겼다.

영양에서 ‘영전’한 그는 그때부터 그야말로 출세가도를 달렸다. 경무관에서 치안감으로 대통령을 모셨고, 마침내 경찰청장이 되었을 때는 우리 모두가 놀라면서도 그가 한없이 자랑스러웠다. 우리 부인들 사이에서도 “믿음직한 남자”로 인기가 좋았다. 한번은 외무고시 출신이 경찰로 투신한 경위를 묻자 “외교관도 좋지만 남대문 등 데모 현장에서 최루탄 냄새를 맡으며 부하들을 지휘해 소요를 막는 기분도 좋다”고 피력하기도 했다.                               

독도를 방문하면서 “다케시마는 없다”라는 명언을 남기고 12대 경찰청장을 거친 그는 다시 코레일 사장이 되어 우리의 자랑스런 동기가 되었다. 그는 문재도 뛰어나 경찰 생활을 마감하면서는 “폴리스 스토리”라는 자서전을, 코레일을 떠나면서는 “레일 스토리”를 출판했고, 두 저서는 아직도 내 책꽂이에 꽂혀 있다. 

2015년 자유총연맹 중앙회장이 되었을 때는 이 친구의 관운은 어디까지 인가 싶었다. 2012년 19대 총선과 이듬해 재보선 때는 나도 선거구로 뛰어가 후원금을 내고 유세를 도왔지만 정치만큼은 그를 받아들이지 않았던가 보다.

그를 마지막 만난 것은 2019년인가 그가 마지막 공직인 총재로 있던 청소년 육성회가 있는 을지로의 노포였다. 내가 교수정년을 맞이하자 날 불러 그 유명한 노가리와 맥주를 사 주었다. “곧 다시 가족들과 함께 만나자”고 약속했지만 코로나가 퍼졌고, 차일 피일 미루다가 오늘 부음을 들었던 것이다.

친구여, 미안하다, 다음에 만날 때는 밤새도록 노가리를 뜯으며 밀린 얘기를 하자구나. 그 때까지 안녕…

 

후기: 일요일인 오늘 오후 상가에 가서 부인과 자식들을 만나고 식장에 상영되는 사진들을 보니 허청장은 복된 일생을 살았다. 성격이 무던한 부인과 평생 화목했고, 친 아들은 없었지만 유능한 두 사위를 얻어 네 외손주를 보았으니 말이다. 한 차례 오욕은 있었지만 한 시대를 풍미한 관운의 일생을 살았으니 그만하면 됐다. 친구여, 명복을 빈다. 한가지, 내가 20일팔년 6월 영국 에든버러에서 오른쪽 발목뼈 3개를 부러뜨리고 귀국해 입원이 가능한 경찰병원애 입원해 연락했을 때, 경찰재직 시 부하로 있던 병원 사무장에 연락해 큼직한 2인실을 1인실로 쓰게 해준 일도 잊지 않겠다...
