국내 스포츠에이전트산업은 선진국에 비하면 아직 걸음마 수준이다.

프로야구나 프로농구의 경우 협회차원에서 에이전트가 직접 연봉협상에 나서는 걸 제도적으로 금지하고 있기 때문이다.

대신 선수들이 연봉협상에서 유리한 입장에 설 수 있도록 뒤에서 자료준비나 데이터 분석 업무를 주로 해준다.

또 선수들의 비시즌 때 일정이나 광고,언론과의 인터뷰 등을 조정하게 된다.

에이전트 제도가 활성화되지 않았기 때문에 아직 외국처럼 선수 연봉의 일부를 커미션으로 받을 수 없다.

대부분의 경기가 주말에 몰려 있기 때문에 자신의 시간도 거의 없는 편이다.

우수한 기량의 중.고교 선수들을 발굴하기 위해 전국을 돌아다니는 것도 주요 업무중 하나다.

외국의 경우 계약서 체결 등 법률 상식이 풍부한 변호사나 연봉 계산 등 수치에 밝은 회계사 출신들이 에이전트 시장에서 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있다.

스포츠 에이전트에게 필요한 자질로는 우선 상대에게 신뢰감을 줄 수 있는 인품이 손꼽힌다.

스포츠에이전트 시장에서도 해외 네트워크화가 화두로 떠오르고 있어 영어 등 어학능력도 필수다.

아직 스포츠 에이전트가 되기 위한 체계적인 방법은 없다.

최근에는 스포츠 선수 출신과 연예인 매니저 출신들이 스포츠 에이전트로 많이 진출하고 있다.

현재 이 세계에서 이름을 날리는 스포츠 에이전트는 20명선.

5년차 에이전트의 연봉은 대기업 동년차 수준을 상회한다.

프로 구단들이 서서히 스포츠에이전트에 대한 필요성을 느끼고 있어 2∼3년 안이면 국내 스포츠계에도 에이전트제도가 일반화될 것으로 보인다.
