새 국어 로마자 표기법 확정 (2000.07.04)

말머리에 오는 우리말 자음 ㄱ·ㄷ·ㅂ·ㅈ은 지난 12월 국립국어연구원이 발표한 국어 로마자 표기법 개정 시안처럼 각각 g·d·b·j로 표기하기로 최종 확정됐다. 이에 따라 현재는 PUSAN이나 TAEGU, CHEJU로 된 부산이나 대구, 제주의 로마자 표기는 BUSAN과 DAEGU, JEJU로 각각 바뀌게 된다. 또 국어 로마자 표기의 가장 골칫덩이로 지적되던 ‘어’와 ‘으’는 논란 끝에 각각 o·u로 구별하게 됐으며 반달표와 거센소리 표시용 어깻점은 사라졌다.
정부는 문화관광부 산하 국립국어연구원이 마련한 새 국어 로마자 표기법이 4일 국무회의를 통과함에 따라 가까운 시일 안에 이를 고시(글로 써서 널리 알림)해 시행할 예정이다. 이로써 1984년 1월13일 고시된 현행 로마자 표기법은 시행 16년 만에 바귀게 된다. 새 표기법에 따른 도로 표지판 및 문화재 안내판 등은 오는 2005년 12월 말까지 모두 고쳐지며 기존 교과서 등 출판물은 2002년 2월 말까지 모두 바뀌게 된다.
