[정주영 이 땅에 태어나서] 독후감

한국외대 명예교수 곽중철 

 

나는 YTN 국제부장으로 일하던 1998년 여름 [이 땅에 태어나서]를 처음 이틀 만에 읽었고, 이번 독후감을 쓰기 위해 내 서가에 그대로 꽂혀 있던 책을 보고 다시 하루 만에 읽었다. 학교에서 정년 퇴직하면서 책을 대거 정리했는데 그 책은 버리지 않았던 거다. 나는 ‘현대’와 어느 정도 개인적 인연이 있었기에 자서전 내용에 국한하지 않고 현대를 둘러싼 나의 특별한 추억도 섞어 독후감을 쓰려 한다.

 

1953년생으로 이제 칠순을 바라보는 내게는 정주영 회장과 나란히 찍힌 사진이 한 장 있다. 내 30대 초반을 바친 서울올림픽이 끝나고 지금은 없어진, 사회주의 미수교국 들과의 경협을 위해 설립된 국제민간경제협의회(IPECK)의 초대 홍보실장을 맡고 있을 때였다. 1990년 가을 서울 시내 호텔에서 열린 국제 경제인 모임에 나타난 정회장을 잠깐 통역할 기회가 있었다. 초등학교 졸업 학력이었지만 그는 영어를 알아듣는 듯했고 통역이 정확한가를 챙기는 눈치였다. 격식을 중시하지 않는 그는 유창한 통역보다 특히 숫자가 정확한 통역을 원한다고 했다. 그는 의전보다 실용을 중시했다.

 

그 때 그를 처음 뵌 것이 아니다. 군 복무를 마친 1978년 여름, 현대건설 신입사원 선발 면접에서 그를 보았기 때문이다. 당시 삼성, 럭키 그룹과 함께 현대는 중동건설 붐에 맞춘 인재선발에 열을 올리고 있었고, 지금 현대해상이 입주해 있는 광화문의 빌딩 면접장에서 그를 처음 보았다. 면접 후 합격통지를 받고 출근한지 얼마 안된 여름 강원도 동해시에서 열린 현대 신입사원 수련대회에서 그를 두번째로 보았다. 동해 모래사장에서 사원씨름대회가 열렸는데 회갑을 훌쩍 넘긴 그가 반 바지하나만 입고 맨 먼저 출전해 시범을 보였다. 나도 출전해 상대방을 넘어뜨리고 본부석을 바라보니 그가 웃으면서 관전평을 하고 있었다. 그는 타고난 장사(壯士)였다.

 

내가 배속된 현대건설의 국제업무부는 해외공사현장을 관리하는 부서로 신입사원의 임무 중 하나가 새벽에 출근해 밤새 들어온 텔렉스의 영문을 번역, 7시 정회장이 주재하는 ‘중동회의’에 올리는 일이었다. 그런데 그 내용을 타자도 치지 않고 그냥 읽을 수 있을 만큼 손으로 써서 올렸고, 회의 도중 간부들은 그 내용을 공유하고 즉석에서 대응책을 결정하는 “현대의 속전속결 경영”을 볼 수 있었다. 현대건설 전체가 의전보다는 실용이었다.

 

그 해 늦가을 미국 벡텔(Bechtel) 사에서 온 미국인 간부를 안내하는 임무가 내게 떨어졌다. 그를 모시고 당시 최고의 의전 차량인 링컨 컨티넨털을 타고 울산 조선소를 다녀왔다. 회장 비서실 누군가의 얘기를 들으니 정회장은 한 달에 몇 번씩 울산을 왕복하며 차량 뒤자리에서 눈을 붙이다가 잠이 깨면 신이 나서 앞자리 좌석을 두드리면서 목청껏 노래를 불렀다고 했다. 그 노래 중 하나가 송대관의 “쨍하고 해 뜰 날”이었다 한다. 그는 신명 난 기업인이었다.

 

1년 동안 현대에 머물면서 외람되게도 말단 신입사원 생활에 회의를 느끼고 취직 이듬해 현대를 떠남으로써 나는 완전히 다른 인생 항로를 밟기 시작했다. 1979년 9월에 퇴직하면서 모교인 한국외대의 동시통역대학원에 입학했던 것이다. 그 후 유학을 마치고 귀국한 1983년 가을, 첫 일로 국제양궁협회의 국제심판 양성훈련을 통역했는데 이틀째 되던 날 한국양궁협회장을 맡고 있던 정몽준 당시 현대중공업 사장이 와서 강의를 참관하고 오전 통역을 마친 나보고 산책을 제안해 이런저런 얘기를 나누었다. 정사정은 내 ROTC 2년 선배로, 아버지를 닮은, 말이 통하는 잘 생긴 사내였다.

정회장이 유치에 큰 힘을 쏟은 덕분에 우리가 주최하게 된 서울올림픽의 조직위원회에서 통역안내과장으로 행사를 마친 후 경제협의회(IPECK)의 홍보부장 시절 그를 세번째로 만나 잠깐 통역을 해드렸던 것이다. 10여년 후 정회장의 명령(?)으로 정몽준 당시 한국축구협회 회장은 2002년 한일 월드컵 대회를 유치해 일본과 공동 주최하게 되었고, 나는 또 월드컵 대회를 통역하면서 정몽준 회장을 자주 보게 되었다. 정주영 회장은 공동개최 결정 소식에 막내아들을 보고 “니가 하는 일이 다 그렇지”하고 핀잔을 줬다지만 부자는 모두 애국자였다.  

 

이후 대통령 공보비서관으로 발령받은 지 얼마되지 않은 1991년 9월 청와대 신 본관 준공기념식이 열렸고, 그 때 시공사인 현대건설의 정회장을 다시 뵙나 했는데 이명박 사장이 대표로 왔었다. 도대체 정회장을 비롯한 현대의 고위인사들은 폼 나게 기념사진을 찍고 하는 일에는 큰 관심이 없어 보였다. 그만큼 의전보다는 실용이었다.

 

이후 청와대를 나와 YTN 국제부장으로 옮기는 인생역정을 거치면서 나는 그를 잊고 살았다. 그를 처음 본 지 20년 만인 1998년 그의 소떼방북 장면을 TV로 지켜보면서 같이 있던 후배기자들에게 “나는 처음으로 20년 전 현대건설을 떠난 것을 후회한다”고 농 섞인 고백을 했다. 그는 ‘위대’한 사람이었고, ‘마초’였으며 ‘쇼맨’이었다. 당시 나는 40대 중반이었지만 이후로 ‘가장 존경하는 인물’난에 “정주영”을 쓰는 데 주저하지 않았다.

 

1001마리 소의 이동은 사상 최고의 드라마였고, 그는 주연이요, 감독이었다. 어느 영화에서, 어느 소설에서 그런 장관을 연출할 수 있다는 말인가?  지금은 북한 땅이 된 강원도 통천군에서 태어나고 자란 그는 17세에 아버지가 소를 팔아 마련한 돈 70원을 몰래 들고 남쪽으로 내려와 일을 시작했는데 그때 고향에서 들고나온 소 한 마리 값을 갚기 위해, 소 1001마리를 몰고 고향인 북한으로 간 것이다.

 

소떼 방북은 닫혔던 북한의 마음을 열었고 남북 교류 활성화의 계기를 마련했다. 이후 1998년 11월에 금강산 관광이 처음으로 시작되었고, 2000년에는 분단 이후 최초로 남북 정상 회담이 열렸다. 내가 1979년 현대를 떠나지 않았다면 그 장편 드라마에 단역이라도 맡았을 텐데, 영문도 모르고 길 떠나는 소들을 보며 더 자랑스럽고 뿌듯했을 텐데… 정회장은 하늘이 한국에 내린 드라마 감독 겸 연출자였다.

 

그가 추억한 여러가지 일화들 중 나는 빈대 얘기를 가장 좋아한다. 그는 아랫사람을 야단칠 때 ‘빈대만도 못한 놈’이라는 말을 달고 살았다. 그가 인천에서 막노동을 할 때 합숙소에 빈대가 들끓어 견디다 못한 사람들이 밥상 위에서 잠을 잤는데 빈대가 밥상 다리를 타고 올라와 물었다. 이번엔 물을 담은 양재기에 상다리를 담가 놓고 잤는데도 며칠 후 빈대가 다시 괴롭혔다. 불을 켜고 보니 빈대들이 벽을 타고 올라가 천장에서 사람 몸에 툭툭 떨어졌다. 그는 "그때 느꼈던 놀라움을 잊을 수가 없었다"고 했다. 빈대도 목적을 위해서는 저토록 머리를 쓰고 죽을힘을 다해 노력하는데 하물며 사람이야 어때야 할까...

 

정 회장이 자주 했다는 유명한 말 “이봐, 해 봤어”는 바로 빈대에서 얻은 철학일 것이다. 자신의 계획에 “안 된다”는 답변이 돌아오면, 그는 입버릇처럼 말했다고 한다. “이봐, 해 봤어?” 이 말은 그의 트레이드마크가 되었다. 정 회장이 서거할 당시 Time 지는 그를 “A Man Who Proved Many People Wrong”이라고 평했다. 한마디로 그는 다른 사람들이 불가능하다고 말한 많은 것들을 해낸 사람이다. 나도 여러 직장에서 지레 겁을 먹고 일을 하지 않으려는 후배를 보면 “일을 안 해도 좋으니 방해는 하지 말고 비켜라”고 했다.

 

그는 이런 말도 남겼다. "누구든 실수할 수 있다. 중요한 것은 한순간 실수했다고 그때까지의 모든 것을 포기해서는 안된다는 것이다. 일을 해 나가는데 어떤 실수보다 치명적인 실수는 일을 포기해버리는 것이다. 정말 마지막 순간까지 최선을 다하라" 정주영은 불굴의 기업인이었다.

 

나는 정회장을 보고 나름대로 더 열심히 살았고, 여러 직장에서 일 중독(workaholic)이라는 말을 들었다. 나는 큰 돈을 만질 수 있는 중동 건설 현장으로 가라던 현대 건설을 떠났다. 대신 남보다 확실히 더 잘할 자신이 있는 동시통역이라는 새로운 전공분야에 뛰어 들었다. 그리고 지난 40년 최선을 다했다. 정년 퇴직을 하고 보니 남은 것은 열심히 가르쳤던 제자들뿐. 그 제자들이 힘없고 남이 알아주지도 않는 분야지만 일가를 이루었다고 나를 위로할 때 나는 정회장을 생각한다. 비록 1년만에 현대를 떠나버려 그를 가까이서 보필하지는 못했지만 그의 기업가 정신은 내 인생관의 일부가 되었다.

 

최근 여러모로 좌절하고 있는 이 땅의 청년들에게 나는 외친다. 20년 전에 돌아가신 정회장의 자서전을 읽고, 언젠가는 세상이 알아주고 자부심을 느낄 날을 위해 떨쳐 일어나라고. 소 한 마리 값 돈만 가지고 고향을 떠나 전 세계를 누빈 후 1001마리 소를 몰고 귀향한 그를 본받아 결코 좌절하지 않은 정회장처럼 ‘돌아온 쟝고”가 되라고…   (끝)
