TV 동시통역의 스타가 사라졌다

 

정XX--- 한국외대 통역대학원 37기니까 졸업한 지 6년쯤 된 남학생인데 그가 2020년이후 주위에서 사라져버렸다. 다른 교수들이나 동기, 후배들도 연락이 되지 않고 홀연히 사회에서 사라져버린 것이다. 최근까지 해왔던 통역, 강의, 박사과장 수업도 다 그만두고 잠적해버렸다. 영화나 드라마에서 처럼 감쪽같이 없어져 버렸다. 21세기 한국, 세계에서 사회 미디어가 가장 발달한 서울이라는 대도시에서…

그는 2019년 12월 27일 내 종로 사무실에 와서 점심을 먹고 근처 다방에서 멀쩡히 커피까지 마셨다. 화제는 앞으로의 통역시장 전망과 박사논문 작성 방향 등 일반적인 것이었다.

앞서 그는 2008년 대학원 동시통역반을 수석으로 졸업했는데 미국에서 대학을 나온 그는 영어뿐 아니라 통역에 필요한 지식, 성실한 태도 면에서 동기생들의 추종을 불허했기 때문이다. 나는 우선 그에게 인하우스 근무를 권해 여의도의 한 공공 기관에 취업시켰다. 그러나 그는 직장이 맘에 들지 않았던지 약 4개월만에 퇴사를 선언했고, 그에 따라 나는 그의 프리랜서 활동을 지원하기 시작했다.

내가 TV통역에 관심이 많고, 최우수 제자를 거기에 투입하려고 애쓰는 이유는 내가 이 나라 TV 동시통역의 효시이기 때문이다. 1983년 7월 파리 통역학교 유학에서 귀국하자 마자 1983년 9월 1일 KAL Boeing 747 기가 사할린 상공에서 소련 전투기에 격추되어 탑승자 269명 모두가 사망했다. 엄청난 사건인지라 당시 여의도 KBS에서는 한국 최초 TV 위성대담 동시통역을 시도했고 내가 통역을 맡았다. 10월 9일 동남아를 순방 중이던 전두환 대통령 일행이 미얀마(버마)에서 아웅산 국립묘지 폭파사태로 17명의 고위관리가 유명을 달리했다. 생존한 대통령 일행이 돌아오자 폭파사태에 따른 위성 TV 대담의 통역도 내 몫이었다. 여의도 세 공중파 방송사를 돌아다니며 통역을 맡는 대목을 맞았다.

후일담으로 들은 얘기지만 당시 모 공중파 방송에서는 이어지는 국제위성 대담에서 누구를 통역사로 쓸 것인가를 두고 격론이 벌어졌디고 한다. 내 후에 통역을 한 후배들과 비교해서 “곽중철은 사투리 억양이 있지만 내용이 더 충실하고 메시지가 귀에 더 잘 들어온다”는 주장이 우세해 내가 계속 통역을 맡게 됐다고 했다.

1984년에는 미국대선 TV 토론에서 1차 토론에서 나이가 많아 열세를 면치 못했던 레이건은 2차 토론에서 먼데일 후보 옆에서 “상대 후보의 미숙하고 경험이 없음을 탓하지 않겠다.”는 말로 기선을 제압하고, “상대방이 나쁜 말을 하니까, 나도 좋은 말을 할 수 없다.”고 했을 때 나는 얼떨결에 “가는 말이 고와야 오는 말이 곱다”라고 통역했는데, 이것이 명 통역이었다는 칭찬을 들었다.

1994년 YTN 입사 후에는 밥 먹듯 방송통역을 했다. 급기야는 YTN 국제부장의 이름을 걸고 영국 다이애나비 장례식(1997.09.07)을 런던 켄싱턴 궁전에서 식장인 웨스트민스터 사원을 거쳐 노스 햄턴 (Northampton) 가족묘지로 떠나기 전까지 3시간 동안 혼자서 중계 통역 해설을 해 정점을 찍었다. 2001년 9월 11일 (09:00-17:20) 항공기납치 동시다발 자살테러로 뉴욕의 110층 WTC가 붕괴됐을 때도 증인이 되었다.

해외 TV 동시통역 시 유의 사항
1. 불특정다수를 대상으로 하기에 떨리고 불안함을 극복해야함.
2. 제일 어려운 통역중 하나이므로 완벽을 추구하면 실패함.
    시청자가 분위기를 파악할 만큼의 내용 전달을 목표로 할 것.
3. 포즈가 3초이상 계속되면 방송사고로 오해될 수 있으므로 연속적으로 통역해야함
4.토론과 문답은 즉흥성과 현장성이 강하므로 용감하게 순발력을 발휘해야함.
5. 오역은 빨리 잊고 다음 발언에 집중해 전체적으로 완성도를 높여야함.

이런 배경 속에서 TV 통역의 명맥을 훌륭히 이어주었던 정XX이 사라지자 제일 큰 문제는 이제 TV 통역의 기준(standard)이 없어졌다는 점이다. 사자가 없는 밀림에서는 여우가 왕이라고, 이제 정XX이라는 기수(standard bearer)가 안보이니 2류 통역사들이 자신이 최고인양 통역 흉내를 내고 있는 것이 현실이다. 뉴스 방송은 많은데다 방송사마다 다른 2급 통역사들을 쓰는 혼란 속에서 바른 평가를 내리지 못한다. 이런 틈을 타 2류 통역사들은 적당히 통역을 하고 일반통역의 2배나 되는 통역료를 받으며 입을 닦고 있다.
