흔히들 통역이나 통역사들을 말할 때, “통역이 되고 있거나 통역사가 있다는 걸 잊어버릴 만큼 몰두할 수 있게 만드는 게 최고의 경지”라고들 말한다. AIIC 명예회장 고(故) 크리스토퍼 티에리 선생이 그런 통역사였다.


 

2025년 8월 7일 밤, 티에리 명예회장이 프랑스 자택의 가족들 곁에서 영면했다. 09.12.1927년 12월 9일 출생에 2025년 8일7일 서거로 98세까지 장수했다. 내가 그를 처음 만난 것이 1980년 9월, 내 나이 27세 그의 나이 53세 였으니 나하고는 26살 터울이었다.

 

그는 ESIT의 통역담당 학장으로서 학장실에서 나를 맞았는데 약 1년전 주먹구구 식으로 작성된 한국외대 통역대학원 GSIT의 “한국학생 4명 통역교육 요청서” 한 장 뿐이었음을 그 때가서 알았다. 교육을 위한 어떠한 재정 지원도 없이 프랑스라는 대국에게 한국 같은 소국의 학생 4명을 떠넘긴 것과 마찬가지였다.  그 만남부터  나와 그와의 밀고당김의 애증이 3년 동안 펼쳐졌다.

 

수시로 그의 사무실을 찾아 때를 쓰면 황당해 하면서도 대국의 스승, 대국의 통역사답게 마지막에는 불어로 “Je m’en occupe (내가 살펴보마)”라고 결론을 내렸다. 지금 생각하면 참 고마운 일이었다.  

 

 

고인은 AIIC 창립 멤버 중 마지막 생존자로서 내가 태어나기 3년전 1956년부터 1959년까지 사무총장(Executive Secretary), 1963년부터 1966년까지 회장을 역임했다. 협회의 창립문 작성에 핵심적인 역할을 담당했으며, 이후 “Birth of a Profession”을 집필한 역사위원회 활동을 통해 통역이라는 직업과 AIIC의 태동을 생생하고도 흥미롭게 기록으로 남겼다.


 

프랑스 외무부에서 수석 통역관으로 봉직하고, ESIT 소장을 역임한 고인은 통역계의 거장으로서 존경 받아 왔다. 그의 기록영화 제목 L’homme qui disparaissait는 알랭 주페 전 프랑스 총리의 발언에서 영감을 얻었다. 주페는 “나다 야피와 크리스토퍼 티에리는 발언 당사자들이 서로 다른 언어를 쓰고 있다는 사실조차 잊게 할 만큼, 스스로를 완전히 ‘사라지게’ 하는 놀라운 재능을 지녔다”고 칭송했으며, 이는 통역사에게 주어질 수 있는 최고의 찬사일 것이다.


 

이 다큐멘터리는 조셉 보레가(Joseph Beauregard) 감독으로 제작된 2024년 작이며, 프랑스 외무부 통역사인 크리스토퍼 티에리의 생애를 다룬 작품이다. 내용은 제2차 세계대전 이후 약 50년(1949–1999)에 걸쳐 국제무대에서 활동한 그의 경력과, 대통령들의 귀에 속삭이는 ‘사라지는 존재’로서의 역할을 조명했다. 그가 은퇴한 1999년은 내가 한국 최초의 모교 통번역대학원에 임용된 해였다.

티에리 같은 대가들이 정상회담에서 양 정상의 귀 속에 속삭이는 통역을 하면 서로 다른 말을 하는 양 정상은 통역서비스를 받고있다는 사실을 잊어버릴만큼 통역사가 사라졌다는(disappear) 느낌을 받는다는 의미다. 마치 배우들이 영화에서 메소드 연기를 하는 것과 같은 것이다. 우선 티에리는 영국 여성과 프랑스 남성 사이에 태어나 완전한 이중언어 구사자가 되었기에 가능한 일이 아니었을까?
