“노 대통령의 영어 통역사가 누구죠?”

노무현(盧武鉉) 대통령의 지난 11~17일 미국 방문 이후 외교통상부
 홈페이지에는 이런 질문이 많았다. 1주일간 노 대통령을 그림자처럼

 통상교섭본부 다자통상협력과에서 근무했던 이 외무관은 새 정부 들어
 아예 청와대 의전실에 파견 나가 있다. 대통령의 영어 통역을 담당하기
 위해서다.

건설교통부에서 오랫동안 해외 주재관을 지낸 부친 이부식(李富植)
교통개발연구원장을 따라 어린 시절을 외국에서 보낸 덕분에 자연스럽게
 영어를 익힌 그는 외교부 내에서 ‘악바리’로 통한다.

99년 미국 컬럼비아대학 로스쿨(Law school)로 2년 연수를 떠났다가,
3년짜리 전 과정을 정복하기 위해 연수를 마친 후 아예 1년 동안
 외교부에 휴직계를 내고 일종의 법학박사 학위에 해당하는 ‘JD(Juris
 Doctor)’를 따냈기 때문이다. 외시 동기생들조차도 이 모습에 혀를
 내둘렀다는 후문이 있을 정도인데, 아직 미혼이어서 동료 외교관들의
 따가운(?) 시선을 받고 있다.

외교부에 들어온 지 얼마 안 된 98년쯤 남북한과 미국·중국이 참가해
 한반도 평화체제 구축 문제를 논의했던 ‘4자회담’의 우리측 통역으로
 들어갔는데, 미국측의 대표 한 명이 “도대체 한국 통역을 알아들을 수가
 없어”라고 반농담을 던진 것이 자극제가 돼 완벽한 영어를 구사하는
 계기가 됐다고 한다. 그러나 대통령 수행 직후 통역자는 언론과 인터뷰를
 일정 기간 할 수 없도록 한 정부 규정에 따라 이 외무관을 기자가 직접
 만날 기회는 없었다.

이 외무관 말고도 외교부에는 20·30대의 새내기급 외무관들이 대통령의
 통역을 직접 맡아 외교가 안팎에서 화제다. 우리 정상이 일본·중국의
 고위 인사들을 만날 때마다 함께 볼 수 있는 장혜령(張惠玲·31)씨와
 여소영(呂昭詠·28)씨 등이다.

일본인조차 어떨 때는 일본 사람으로 착각할 정도의 능숙한 일본어
 실력을 자랑하는 장씨는 기업체에 근무했던 아버지의 일본 근무로
 소학교(小學校) 5·6년 과정을 도쿄(東京)에서 지냈다. 연세대
 신문방송학과 91학번으로 대학 시절부터 수를 셀 수 없을 정도의 통역
 경험을 하면서도 장학금을 거의 놓치지 않았고, 97년에는 한국외국어대
 동시통역대학원 한-일과를 수석으로 입학했다. 99년 일본어
 통역전문요원으로 별정직 5급에 특채되기 전에는 화장품의 CF모델,
케이블TV의 강사, 공중파 방송의 리포터로도 활약했다. 편안한 통역과

이에 비해 대만국립대에서 학부·석사과정을 마친 여 외무관은 진지함이

2001년 다이빙궈(戴秉國) 당시 중국공산당 대외연락부장이 방한했을 때의
 일. 한승수(韓昇洙) 외무장관과의 면담을 마치고 나오던 그는 기자에게
“난 저 통역(여씨)분이 우리 중국 사람인 줄 알았습니다. 어찌나 고전과
 현대어에 해박하던지 놀랐습니다. 저런 인재가 한국에 있다는 사실이
 대단합니다”라며 감탄사를 연발했다. 장래 계획을 묻자 여씨는
“중국어도 계속 공부해야겠지만, 이제 배필도 만나고 싶다”고 했다.

통역의 세계는 일반인들의 눈에는 화려하게 비칠지도 모르지만, 고도의
 세밀함과 인내력도 요구하기 때문에 상상치 못한 고통이 따른다고 한다.
그럼에도 실제 통역업무를 맡고 있는 이들은 “우리나라를 알리는
 자부심과 긍지에 힘든 줄 모른다”면서 “믿음직한 젊은이들이 보람 있는
 현장에 더 많이 뛰어들기를 기대한다”는 바람을 잊지 않았다.
