대통령 통역은 왜 ‘독이 든 성배’인가

대통령 통역은 흔히 ‘독이 든 성배’라 불린다. 성공해도 공은 대통령에게 돌아가고, 작은 실수라도 생기면 곧장 통역사에게 비난이 집중된다. 지난 8월 25일 한·미 정상회담 직후 대통령 통역을 맡은 조영민 행정관을 둘러싸고 논란이 이어지는 것도 같은 맥락이다. 일부는 그를 백악관의 이연향 통역국장과 단순 비교하며 교체론까지 제기한다. 그러나 이는 공정하지 않다.

이런 조건을 무시한 채 ‘더 나이 많은 통역사, 더 원어민 같은 영어’를 요구하는 것은 현실을 모르는 주장이다. 대통령 통역은 단순한 언어 능력 이상의 과제를 안고 있다. 정치적 맥락, 정상 간의 긴장, 회담장의 압박을 동시에 소화해야 한다. 이런 무대에서 첫 시도부터 완벽을 기대하는 것은 무리다.

 

따라서 중요한 것은 기다림이다. 대통령과 통역사 사이의 호흡은 시간이 쌓여야 자연스러워진다. 조 행정관 역시 경험을 축적하며 점차 안정감을 얻을 것이다. 2차, 3차 정상회담에서는 더 여유 있고 부드러운 통역을 보여줄 수 있을 것이다.

 

나아가 대통령 통역을 특정 개인의 능력에만 맡길 것이 아니라, 장기적으로 체계적인 인재 육성과 보호 장치가 필요하다. 대통령 통역이 언제까지나 ‘독이 든 성배’로 남지 않으려면, 통역사를 희생양이 아닌 국가 외교의 동반자로 존중하는 문화가 자리 잡아야 한다.
